new things

June 12, 2008

We have been busy, lil bug, exploring the world together in this oppressive heat. Many things you do fill me with sheer delight and make me laugh.

  • Cheerios are your most favorite food in the world, and when you eat them, you chatter. It’s seems as though they make you so happy that you feel the need to mumble with delight. It’s quite charming.
  • You had spaghetti-o’s at Mammy’s house last night—a fix to a last-minute decision to stay for dinner without food for you. You liked them. Each bite was spit back into your hand so you could observe what you’d just allowed in and then put back in to be chewed with your overworked two bottom front teeth.
  • You got your first birthday present, an early one from Aunt Dixie, since she is here now and won’t be for your birthday. She gave you an Elmo phone, a rubber ducky and a cute dinosaur outfit with plaid cargo shorts. You delighted in each gift, but especially loved the card that had an elephant on it. You kept opening it as if you were reading it over and over again.
  • I check on you each night before I go to bed, and each night I marvel at your new pretzel position and the as yet unused quadrant of your bed you’ve discovered. One night you’ll be on your side in a C shape in the upper left part of the crib. The next night you’re on your belly and down at the bottom sixteenth of the bed. As we leaned in to see if you were awake this morning, we heard music playing. You had discovered the dinosaur hanging on the crib rail that plays music when the string is pulled and had pulled it in your early morning explorations.
  • You have learned that fussing and whining produce results. Daddy was holding you when you were fussing and said, “You are getting a personality for yourself, and I do not much care for it.” That cracked your Mammy and Papa up.
