a capitol adventure

June 4, 2009

We joined Daddy and a co-worker on their recent trip to DC to receive a schmancy award. There was a reasonable amount of down-time, so we got to play and see the sights a bit. We found the brand-new playground below just a couple blocks from our hotel. We visited a friend of momma’s who works right behind our hotel who hadn’t even noticed the playground—different set of eyes when you’re looking to entertain a high-energy toddler, I guess.

You crack me up with your technique for eating fruit leather (see photo below). You fold it over, eat a hole in and then put your finger or thumb in to eat the rest of it. Brilliant! We walked and you strolled a great deal in this very walkable city, and we took in some sights as well—the Washington Monument, the White House, the Capitol, the Library of Congress. You and Ruwaida (born two days after you) were mostly interested in the pigeons and passing buses.

We rode the carousel at the Mall, which you loved with mouth gaping open and a big grin for about four times around. Then you were bored or scared, and I had to hold you on the horse until the ride came to a stop. No one should have to work that hard on an automated ride.

The trip home was a little exhausting. We got up early for a breakfast the group honoring Daddy’s organization hosted, then walked, had a picnic and played in the fountain at Dupont Circle, and headed straight for the Metro, shuttle bus and train to BWI. After all those modes of transportation, our flight was delayed by an hour, and your little head did not hit the bed until about a quarter to ten. I think it’s pretty safe to say we all had a great time. Daddy and I noted an important travel consideration too. Check out the hotel room floor plan before making a reservation. This hotel was great: there was a wall—a bit of an ante-chamber to the bathroom—between us and where we set up your crib. Perfect. We could put you to bed, draw the curtains and turn on the TV once you went to sleep.
